    HCL

Hindustan Computers Limited, which is often referred to as HCL Enterprise, is reputed to be one of India's largest computing, electronics and information technology company. The company is based in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and comprises HCL Technologies and HCL Infosystems, which are two publicly listed Indian companies.

Founded in 1976 by Shiv Nadar along with Ajai Chowdhry and four of their colleagues, HCL focused on the Indian IT hardware market for the first two decades when it existed, and had only some sporadic activity in the global market.

In 1981, the company created a concern focusing on addressing NIIT, the computer training industry, although currently it has divested its stake in the latter. The year 1991 saw HP take up minority stake in the company (26%), after which it was called HCL HP, for the entire five year period of the joint venture. Upon termination of the same in the year 1996, HCL was split into HCL Technologies (which addresses global IT services market) and HCL Infosystems (which addresses Indian and APAC IT hardware market). The company HCL has since then always functioned as a holding company.

In the year 1976, Shiv Nadar started a new company named Microcomp Limited, after quitting a plush executive level job. His focus was on design and manufacture of scientific calculators. This company churned profits and provided its founders money to start an organization focused on manufacturing computers. This organization was renamed Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL). It received support from the Uttar Pradesh government when it setup its manufacturing unit in Noida. The company's founders contributed Rs 2 million into the venture. NIIT was started in 1981, catering to increase demands in the field of computer education. By the start of 2000, Nadar had divested his own stake in this business venture.

After its IPO, HCL made forays into the global IT scenario in 1999, and now concentrates on Transformational Outsourcing, along with working for clients in all those areas which re-define the core business processes. HCL boasts of an extensive global offshore infrastructure. It has global network of offices extending upto 16 countries, and tries to deliver solutions spanning a wide range of verticals featuring Retail & Consumer, Financial Services, Automotive, Life Sciences Aerospace, Telecom, Semiconductors and MPE (Media Publishing & Entertainment).
